Are gas prces high?? If, so what do you do for transportation to make life easier?
In the 169 year old school district controls the 92 schools in the school district with over 38, 000 students. The largest school district in Missouri and 108th in the world. The MAP, or Missouri Assessment Program, is a series of standardized tests that are take yearly by kids but are used as clues of the school's efficiency. This is important because many factors like, distribution of public funds, are determined based on how the student performs.

Since Kozol's book was written, have parents become more involved?
"Book clubs have been used successfully in many classrooms and schools to motivate students to read and
discuss books of their choosing. In this column, we share a book club designed for parents of students in the
East St. Louis School District #189."
"Another of our jobs is to make parents aware
of what might be going on in their child’s class-
room. We discuss what is happening in schools.
Topics such as No Child Left Behind and
School Improvement Plans are discussed. We
also talk about what they need to be looking
for when they visit their child’s classroom."
Parents have been getting involved to a much greater extent then before. There are now Parent Reading Clubs that help parents to teach their children to read. Reading through the article, there are many parents that havent even heard of certain books that the children like to read. Oprah Winfrey and a program called Summer Bridges, along with other programs, have helped to start this program and keep it in commission. East St. Louis is trying to encourage the children to read, but they are also getting the parents involved much more. I think this is extremely important because if the parents are knowledgeable, then they can pass this on to the children. Also, every parent wants to see their children grow, so by giving a parent a book to read with their child, they are helping to create an even stronger family bond. Not only are families getting involved with their children's learning, but the government and parents seem to be working much better together to improve learning then in Kozol's novel.
